Training and Education

Obair Newmarket-on-Fergus (LDSIP) facilitates the provision of training and education programmes locally by liasing with a variety of agencies and through the provision of facilities.  At present, the Clare VEC Adult Basic Education Service provide classes locally, for further information please see link for Clare VEC Courses.

Other courses provided in the South Clare region include;

St. Patrick's Comprehensive School offer a range of courses including full time Post Leaving Cert courses and part-time BTEI and evening classes.

BTEI Courses - Part-Time 

  • Special Needs/Classroom Assistant
  • Care of the Older Person
  • English as a Foreign Language
  • Basic Computer Course
  • Special Needs
  • Arts & Crafts for Childcare

These courses are open to anyone wishing to return to Education on a part-time basis.  No previous certification is required.

Post-Leaving Cert (PLC)

FETAC Level 3 - Duration 1 year
Childcare, Special Needs/Classroom Assistant *
Community Care and Caring for the Elderly **

* The Childcare, Special Needs/Classroom Assistant course will enable graduates to work as Special Needs Assistants in Primary or Post Primary Schools.  It is also aimed at those who are interested in working with children at Pre-school, Nurseries, Montessori, Playgroups and Crèches.
** This course is for those wishing to work in Nursing Homes, Community Care and Respite Care.

These courses are FETAC accredited.

Youthreach Shannon

Youthreach is an education and training programme for young people aged 15-18 who have left school early.  It offers young people a second chance to continue their education, develop skills and confidence and gain certification.

If you are over fifteen, left school early and interested in doing the Leaving Certificate Applied, subjects on the course include; arts & crafts, music, woodwork, cookery, computers and sport.  Career Guidance is also available to all students. 

Successful candidates will receive a training allowance, which includes a subside towards travel and meals.
